Major
The rank of Major is the next step-up from a Captain. Majors usually fill the role of Squadron Commander.
Prerequisites:- Pass Joint Special Forces Selection

Captain
Captain is the first Officer rank available in the Special Forces. Upon passing Joint Special Forces Selection as an Officer, the individual will be promoted to the rank of Captain. Captains in Special Forces fill the role of Troop Commander. In this position, they lead a Special Forces Troop both in and out of the field to gain experience for promotion to Squadron Commander.

OF-2Capt. -
Lieutenant
The rank of Lieutenant is not used at a Troop level. This rank in Z Squadron represents Squadron Operations Cell members such as Intelligence Officers.

OF-1Lt. -
Second Lieutenant
The rank of Second Lieutenant is not used in Special Forces. This rank in Z Squadron represents enablers that are tasked to Special Forces Operations such as Intelligence Officers.

OF-12Lt. -
Warrant Officer Class 1
Warrant Officer Class 1 is the highest Non Commissioned Rank attainable. Individuals who hold the rank are commonly experienced Squadron Sergeant Majors.

- Pass the Swimmer Canoeist Specialist Qualifition
- Pass the Junior Command Course or Junior Brecon
- Pass the Senior Command Course or Senior Brecon
- Pass the Advanced Command Course or Senior Brecon

Warrant Officer Class 2
The Warrant Officer Class 2 rank is usually held by high level Troop Sergeants or Squadron Sergeant Majors. The rank represents an individual who has proven themselves as a capable and proficient Senior Non Commissioned Officer who can assist the Troop Commander and Squadron Commander respectively.

- Pass the Junior Command Course or Junior Brecon
- Pass the Senior Command Course or Senior Brecon
- Pass the Advanced Command Course or Senior Brecon

Colour Sergeant
The Colour Sergeant rank usually represents the Troop Sergeant. The rank can be achieved through an individual proving themself as a proficient leader. There is only one Troop Sergeant per Troop therefore meaning the position and rank do not have high availability.

Sergeant
A Sergeant in Special Forces is usually a Team Leader. A Sergeant rank represents an individual who has spent at least 6 years in the Special Forces. Once an individual has become Permanent Cadre they can take the Advanced Command Course. Assuming they pass, they will be eligible for the rank of Sergeant and for a Team Leader position.

OR-5Sgt. -
Corporal
The rank of Corporal in the Special Forces signifies experience of the individual's job role and capability in leadership. The most senior rank an individual can attain without being a Team Leader in a Troop is Corporal. In order to be promoted to Corporal, an Operator will have to pass the Junior Command Course or Junior Brecon.

OR-4Cpl. -
Lance Corporal
The rank of Lance Corporal in Special Forces shows a capability in leadership and that an individual has passed the full Joint Special Forces Selection. Upon reaching the culmination of the Swimmer Canoeist Specialist Qualification, Marines will be eligible for promotion to Lance Corporal.

OR-3LCpl. -
Marine
In the Special Boat Service, after completion of Joint Special Forces Selection, new members will be promoted to the rank of Marine. This contradicts the Special Air Service who utilise the rank of Trooper as an equivalent. The rank of Marine pays homage to the Corps of Royal Marines of which's ex members constitute a large portion of the Special Boat Service.

OR-2Mne. -
Candidate
A Candidate in United Kingdom Special Forces is not an official rank. Until individuals undertaking Joint Special Forces Selection pass, they remain the current rank in the military service they are in. Once a soldier or marine has passed Joint Special Forces Selection, they will be assigned the rank of Marine whilst also keeping their shadow rank in their previous unit.
